He played a total of 18 seasons throughout his career in the NHL as a center for the NFL teams Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, and Dallas Stars. He played 12 seasons for the Montreal Canadiens and ended his career with the Dallas Stars playing 5 seasons. Before that, he was traded to St. Louis Blues by the Canadiens for a year. In the year 2000, after leading the Dallas Stars to the finals of the Stanley Cup, they were defeated by New Jersey Devils. He then brought his whole 18-year career in the NHL to an end.
