Two alumni, a former principal, a retired English teacher and a sports journalist were honored for their contributions during the Lahainaluna High School Foundation’s “Legends of Lahainaluna” banquet that was held Dec. 7 after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s winners were: Clifton Akiyama, Class of 1962 graduate and retired electrician; Walter Chihara, active parent volunteer and sports journalist; Glen Pascual, Class of 1989 graduate and sports photographer; Penny (Seaver) Wakida, retired English teacher and active volunteer; and Ralph Murakami, former principal, who was honored posthumously with his daughter Dr. Patti Endo and her husband Randall accepting the award.
Mark Vieth, editor of The Lahaina News, also accepted the Business Partner Legend award.
The 2022 recipients were presented with their plaques from foundation President Mark Tillman, and received lei, school cap and congratulations from board members during the event at Hale Pa’ina.
The foundation also honored and thanked former Executive Director Jeff Rogers on his retirement.
The evening also included music by Na Hoku Hanohano Promising Artist recipient Derek Pono Murray and his sons Pono Jr., a 2017 Lahainaluna alum, and Kuhao, a Class of 2023 senior. Wife and mother Leimomi Murray also performed a hula auana.
